There are three reasons why a ship can float
Most ships are called displacement vessels, where the weight of the ship is balanced by the buoyancy of the water displaced by the hull. For flat-bottomed vessels, such as hydrofoils, the lift is due to the increased speed of the boat, and its lift increases as it moves relative to the water until the hydrofoil is in motion. Non-draining vessels, such as hovercraft, support their weight because of the high-pressure air (air cushion) produced by the vessel, so they can maintain a certain distance
